After a tiring hike in the Black Mountains in the Beacons, we decided to stop by the Carreg Cennen castle. Wales is for sure the land of Castles..one more beautiful than the other. This castle is situated on a picturesque mound and when we got here, we learned that they close by 6.30 in the evenings. Since we drove a good 40 mins, we didnt want that to go waste. So we sneaked up the hill and managed to catch a glimpse of it.

The best part of this is that we had the castle all to ourselves!! That added to the intrigue of the already exciting experience. The castle ruins are beautiful and gives us an idea of the life that used to swarm in these beautiful monuments hundreds of years ago.

The castle is protected by limestone cliffs to the south and rock-cut ditches to the west. To the north and east there is an outer ward, barbican, gatehouse, drawbridge and deep pits. In the south-east corner of the inner ward steps lead to a vaulted passage and a natural cave beneath the castle. A fresh water spring rises in the cave, which would have been a useful supplement to the castle's water supply of rainwater cisterns during dry weather. The castle is under the care of Cadw, who have renovated and restored some of the remains. The castle is accessible through a local farm, followed by a steep climb up the hill on which it stands.

In early July 1403 Owain Glyndwr, together with 800 men, attacked Carreg Cennen, but, although inflicting severe damage to the walls, failed to take the castle. It was defended against Glyndwr's forces, who laid siege to it for several months, with Owain himself present, by a man who was to marry one of Glyndwr's daughters just a few years later, Sir John Scudamore of Herefordshire.

Wars of the Roses - The damage was repaired in 1409. However, in 1461, during the Wars of the Roses, Carreg Cennen became a Lancastrian stronghold. A Yorkist force subsequently captured the castle and set about demolishing it with a team of 500 men. - Courtesy Wiki

It was extremely cold with steady headwinds of about 8-12miles. The sun was setting behind the castle and the rain clouds were beginning their southerly migration to settle down to a steady downpour later that night in our camp!

Thanks for viewing and have a nice day!

My other house ! ;o))

My other house ! ;o))

I had a wonderful, if rather tiring, day yesterday visiting Buckingham Palace to see the State Rooms, the wedding dress, cake and the Queen's Faberge collection.

Not the best photography opportunity day though, as it is not allowed at all within the Palace and although you are allowed to within in grounds as you leave, there wasn't a decent view point ! Even at the front of the Palace it was tricky, so I was glad I didn't take my heavy Canon with me !

The State Rooms were amazing (I'd never been before), the wedding dress was far more beautiful and intricate than either the television coverage or photographs showed it and we were struck by how slim the Duchess of Cambridge is. I also loved her bouquet (there is an artificial replica there) ..... it's very small and oh, so dainty and pretty !

The cake was incredible ..... the workmanship and skill in creating it were just mind-blowing but for me, it was a bit too baroque and over the top for my personal taste. However, you had to remember it was a Royal wedding cake, and so could not be simple and understated !!!

The Faberge collection was stunning .... not just eggs but many other pieces including some exquisite enamelled flowers.

We are experiencing an unusually hot end to September ..... it was 27*+ yesterday ..... the hottest September day since 1895 ..... and as they are having 6,000 visitors a day to see the exhibition it was very hot and crowded, as you can imagine ! In fact, so hot they had three people collapse yesterday, one of whom we unfortunately witnessed.

It is very well organised though with strict staggered entry times by ticket only and a queuing/ holding system that Disney would be proud of ! As you can imagine too, security is very strict ..... in fact identical to airport security to get into the Palace !

It was all very well worth it and I'm so very glad I went.
In Wallace and Gromit's words ..... it was "A Grand Day Out " !!!!
